Culturally optimised learning design |
Contrary to common belief, adding bells and whistles such as flash animation and interactive video do not help translating elearning content across cultures. In fact it will often have the opposite effect and drown the intended message.
Learning solutions that have been customised by simply translating text or speech, or where symbols or icons have been 'localised', also have a high risk of failure.
In short, to guarantee a higher chance for success, a learning solution should always be designed with the learners' culture and cultural learning style in mind. |

The 3LEARNING analysis and design models take into account:
- Working and learning style (e.g. group vs. individual learning, apprenticeship vs. independent)
- Learning and Authority (must a learner be able to challenge a teacher/the system)
- The cultural importance of certification vs. informality of learning
- Cultural use of graphics, symbolism, and e.g. the connotation of colours
- Question structure (open vs. closed questions, multiple choice, etc)
- Length and complexity of learning sessions and lessons
- Lesson structure (problem/solution/questions vs. solution/problem/questions)
- Culturally adaptable scenarios and examples
